Charles Richard Grills

Charles Richard 'Dick' Grills, born March 18, 1913 in DuQuoin, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2002 at the Motion Picture and TV Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Grills of Sarasota, Florida and several nieces and nephews. Dick attended schools in DuQuoin. After graduation from Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL, Dick went to Los Angeles, California where he met and married Lucille Marie Morris, who passed away in 1979.
In 1937, Dick went to work for The Walt Disney Company in Burbank, California in the Cartoon Camera Department, where he worked on many of Disney's most memorable animated features. Dick was part of the original crew that operated the newly invented multiplane camera that gave depth to animated films. He retired in 1979 as head of the Camera Department.
Dick loved to travel and there are few ports of call that you might mention that Dick and Lucille hadn't visited. Dick was a great sports fan and even though he moved west, he remained a staunch St. Louis Cardinal fan. He loved to hunt and looked forward to his annual trek to Wyoming to hunt elk and sheep and to Missouri and Illinois to hunt wild turkey, ducks and pheasants with his boyhood buddies.
During World War II, Dick was in the Navy where he served in the area of 'aerial reconnaissance'.
Dick was buried with his wife, Lucille, in Versailles, Missouri. They had no children. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity.
